ON THE HEAD PHONES: KATY PERRY

Katy Perry is a breath of fresh air to the music scene. She is known for her first single, "Your So Gay" and the recent release of "I kissed a Girl" that is currently being played everywhere. Not only is she a great singer but, she is a lyrical genius. She has been writing for many years. She is definitely not new to this industry.

Her career started in 2001 when she was signed to Red Hill Records as Katy Hudson. She has worked with the record production team, The Matrix and has done some writing for movie soundtracks. In 2007 she was signed to Capitol Music Group and the rest is history.

Yes, I love her voice but, her style is so FIERCE. She is a lover of vintage and due to her past swing dancing classes has a strong taste for the 1940s style.

FOSSIP

Giorgio Armani designed a private wardrobe for Christian Bale for his role as Bruce Wayne in the Batman movie: The Dark Knight. The film is out right now in the US. Armani quotes" It is also fitting that I should be dressing a superhero this year, as I am pleased to have chaired the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art's exhibition, Superheroes-Fashion and Fantasy, last May...”

What's in a Label?

I just watched the TYRA banks show this morning. The topic of the day was LABELS especially designer labels. She interviewed individuals who live for the NAME BRAND. TYRA pulled a switch-a-ru and showed them clothes that they thought was expensive but, it was actually cheaper. It was funny because they couldn't tell the difference. One girl complained that she was very unhappy when she wore a lower-cost dress. But, to her suprise she was actually wearing a Narciso Rodriguez dress.

I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting a designer label but, is it worth being bankrupt or debt for the extra dollars. And plus, I think it is how you wear the clothes. Why brag about buying expensive clothes if you can't even wear it right.

There are some great lower-cost brands that I love. My favourite ...H&M of course. I love their innovative styles and funky designs. Also, I love to hit up vintage stores. In Toronto, you can find some great ones on Queen Street West.

MY FAIR LADY

Last night I had the pleasure of watching MY FAIR LADY. This film is about a Professor who dares an acquaintance that he can teach any woman to speak so properly that he could pass her off as a duchess. So, he challenges himself to turn a woman, with a poor accent, into royalty. My Fair Lady was originally a book that was formed into a play and than adapted to film. The costumes in this movie are delightful. They help tell a story from beginning to end. You are able to see the crescendo from Rags to Riches.

The costume designer for this film was Cecil Beaton. Due to Cecil's strong photography skills, all the scenes in this movie seems to appear as a photo still. I found myself eager to see what was next!

You need to check out this movie! It's a good break from all this reality TV.

LOOK OF THE WEEK

(credit:Getty Images)

I LOVE Rihanna's outfit at the MMVAs 2008. I adore her ruffled back-less top and "Police" inspired hat. I find that Rihanna was being very fashion forward! I have notice that in all her performances lately that she has been bringing more elaborate looks to the stage. And I commend her on it. (Oh ya, and her stylist!)

TREND ALERT: Swimsuits

Summer is here and with hot weather comes, SWIMSUITS. Now, when I say swimsuits I am not just talking about bikinis. Swimsuits have come such a long way, they are now an added garment to your closet. Swimsuits are not just for water anymore!

Also, swimsuits are made to compliment all body types. If you have a narrow frame, try swimsuits with a halter or that has patterns all over it...go CRAZY. Round at the hips? Try a lower cut hem than a hi-cut. If you are not round at the hips and want to be, get a suit with frills or with a gathered skirt. Very busty? Try 1-2 inch straps that cross at the back. The cross at the back will give you extra support.

This Summer while you sport your new swimsuit, wear it with a pair of wedges or a cute pair OFgladiator sandals.

Here are some of my favourite trends for Swimsuits from 2008 Spring/Summer Ready to Wear collections:

DENIM EFFECT

Chanel

BOLD GOLD

Iceberg

FLIRTY GIRL

Luisa Beccaria

ART NOUVEAU

Danielle Scutt

Currently, I can't get enough of VERSE. She is a British-American girl who can sing and rap. Her style is CRAZY!!

Verse is a 21 year old free-spirit who has started to get more recognition for her song SHOPAHOLIC. Growing up with a Jamaican father and Latin American mother has given her a broad understanding of music and culture.

Her look and style is very reminiscence of Denise Matthews of Vanity 6. He sense of style is confident and bold. She has been admired on how she puts her outfits together but, has admitted to never having a stylist. Her look is originally her own.

Farewell to Valentino

Here's a link to watch Valentino's LAST Ready to Wear Spring 2008 Collection. One thing I love about Valentino is that he really understands a women's body. He knows what looks good! How many times have you watched the Red Carpet action at the Oscars and hear the words, " I am wearing Valentino".

YSL: One of the greats has passed

Yves St. Laurent has passed away in Paris this week. He was one of the great French fashion designer and he was only 71 years of old. At 21 he was appointed designer of Christian Dior after Dior sudden passing. After be called to serve his native country of Algeria, he came back to find out he was replaced by another designer. With the right connections he was able to start his own couture house and that was the beginning of the famous YSL logo.

In memory of him, I decided to show you some of his 2001 Spring Couture collection.
